Chipper Cash Virtual Card Review

I am writing this Chipper Cash Review, not as a reviewer, but as a user of the app. My first experience was when I used it to purchase a domain name on Namecheap on the 11th of December, 2022. Since then, I have gone ahead to make 16 payments worth $89.75 and have created 2 Chipper Cash virtual cards

Over the years, I have known the pros and cons of Chipper Cash. I know what works and what does not – and can tell you the areas they need to improve. In this Chipper Cash app review, you will learn all you need to know about their virtual cards and dollar rates.

What is Chipper Cash?

Chipper Cash is a virtual card provider for cross-border payment. It does more as you can also use it to pay local bills, buy data/airtime, and fund your betting wallets. But its main use case is for making International payments where it provides you with virtual dollar cards. It offers its services in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and the United Kingdom.

How Chipper Cash works is simple. It provides you with a Nigerian bank account (mine was with 9 Payment Service Bank). You send money to this account and use it to fund the virtual dollar card provided. The exchange rate of the Naira to dollar is determined by Chipper Cash, but based on the black market rate.

Chipper Cash Virtual Card – an Overview

The backbone of this service is its virtual dollar cards and that is its main product. It is a debit card that holds currency value in USD. This card is virtual and so, you don’t get it physically delivered to you. All you get is the details of the card which includes the card number, expiry date, and the CVV.

Using these details, you can carry out your payments online. The card is not provided for free. It will cost you N3,000 to pay for the card – this is called the USD Card Issuance Fee. There are other charges such as the USD Card Declined Transaction Fee.

This is charged when web services you provide your card details for payment tried to charge you but you have an insufficient balance. The charge is N6.94 per declined transaction. For this reason, you are advised by Chipper Cash to maintain a sufficient balance for your transactions.

Uses of Chipper Cash Virtual Card

The virtual card provided by the service can be used for shopping and paying for subscriptions online. For me, I use their virtual dollar cards for both work and personal usage. On the work side of things, I use them to pay for domain names on Namecheap, hosting with Amazon AWS, and ISP proxies with Proxy-Seller. For personal usage, I link it with my Apple ID and use it to pay for iCloud+, Apple Music, and Medium membership.

You can use it for general payment online as it is a Visa card and is globally accepted. You can use it to pay for your subscription on Netflix, and make purchases on Amazon and AliExpress, among others. currently, it is a good option for binding with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Anywhere Visa cards are acceptable, Chipper Cash virtual cards should work.

Did I experience any problems with payment? Yes, but only with one web service. I have tried using it for payment on Semrush, an online search engine marketing intelligence tool and it failed. That is the only site I have tried using it on and it failed.

How to Fund and Use Chipper Cash Dollar Card

  • Account Creation & Verification

At this point, I expect you to know you need to register and verify your account. You need an ID for verification which can either be your National ID card or NIN slip, voter card, driver’s license, or Nigerian passport. Verification is not immediate but also wouldn’t take a long time. If I can remember vividly, I got verified within 3 hours – things might be different now.

  • Funding Your NGN Account

As stated earlier, you are given a Nigerian Bank account number. However, since Chipper Cash is not a bank, it provides you with account numbers from partner banks. For mine, the bank is the 9 Payment Service Bank (9PSB). The account name is usually “CHIPPER CASH / YOUR FULL NAME”. Money sent to this account will drop in your Naira wallet and from there, you can either pay bills, buy data/airtime, fund your betting wallets or virtual dollar card, or send it to someone else via transfer.

The transfer option locally includes sending to Nigerian Bank accounts, eNaira, or to another Chipper Cash user either via tag or invite phone number. There is also international transfer available, allowing you to send money to someone in Ghana, Uganda, and Rwanda.

  • Create and Fund Virtual Dollar Card

To use their virtual dollar card, you will need to create one. It will cost you N3,000 to create a virtual dollar card. Before doing this, make sure you add funds to your NGN account as the card payment deduction will be made from there. Go to the card tab and create a USD card. You will be charged N3000 for the creation.

Then click on the “top-up” icon to add funds. Choose your NGN balance and enter the amount in NGN that you want to top-up, the equivalent in USD will be shown, with the Naira to dollar exchange rate based on the black market rate. However, the Chipper Cash rate is more expensive and might even look like a rip-off.

  • Making Payment Online Using Dollar Card

To make a payment, all you need is to log into the app and get the card details. To get the card details, go to the card section and swipe the card to the left until you get to the USD card, click on the “Show details” icon with an eye, and the card number, expiry date, and CVV will be displayed on the card image. Copy these details and use them where you need to use the card for payment.

What I like About This

I like how easy to use the app is. The interface is simple and does not bore you. However, from the utility side, I like the fact that it works – perfectly, anytime. When card verification needs to be done for payment, the SMS arrives on time and I do not have to wait or even retry it. I also like the fact that I can withdraw from the card to my NGN balance to pay urgent bills and 2Ks.

What I Do Not Like

While it works, it does have its issues. The number one thing I do not like about the Chipper Cash service is that the card top-up service is not always available. In the last month (this review was written on March 11, 2024), it has been unavailable for top-up 3 times. For the period it is unavailable, you can still make payments with your dollar card balance. However, you can’t top it up.

This will cause you great inconvenience, especially if you need to make payment urgently. For now, the fix to this is – you don’t have to wait until when you need to make payment before you top-up your balance. Just fund your USD card anytime you have the funds so you don’t have to worry about the top-up service being online or not.

Another thing I do not like is their dollar rate to naira – it is cheating in some way and in some instances, you will have to pay up to or even N70 more than the black market rate.

Chipper Cash Dollar Rate to Naira

The Chipper Cash Naira to Dollar rate on the 11th of March, 2024 is N1,696.6160 = $1. This is way above the black market rate at the same time as the black market rate is 1624.732 on Naira Rates (@naira_rates on Twitter). On the Cenoa app, $1 is exchanged for N1594. Which is way cheaper than Chipper Cash. However, you can’t use the Cenoa app for payment like you can use the Chipper Cash app. Payday is a better comparison and does have a more expensive exchange rate, making ChipperCash the better option here.

Conclusion

Chipper Cash is one of the best options in the market for International payments. And for now, I am still stuck with it as it helps me get payments done easily without issues. For this reason, I will recommend it international transactions online. However, it rate is not good as you should be ready to pay N50 - N70 more than the black market rate.
